TIANJIN PORT PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL CONTAINER TERMINAL CO., LTD. BREAKS THE RECORD ON HANDLING THROUGHPUT OF REEFER CONTAINERS ON A SINGLE VESSEL
On 22 March 2020, the container vessel “MSC Brunella” (地中海布魯內拉), loaded with imported reefer containers of 3,323 TEUs, docked at the berth of Tianjin Port Pacific International Container Terminal Co., Ltd. This broke the handling throughput record of reefer containers on a single vessel in China. Reefer container is a type of container which fulfills the requirement of low temperature and is suitable for the transportation and storage of various perishable foods. It is regarded as the “noble” among all types of containers. As affected by the novel coronavirus epidemic, a large number of imported reefer containers were congested at the major ports in China during Lunar New Year. In response to such challenges, Tianjin Port Group (天津港集團), the controlling shareholder of Tianjin Port Development (天津港發展), closely followed the strategic decisions of the Central Committee of the Party and the State Council by contributing RMB13 million to the expansion and renovation works of its reefer container depots. With the full support of the customs authority, the cargo clearance process was optimised and the policy of “direct discharge from vessel side” for imported reefer containers was implemented. The clearance and delivery of goods in reefer containers are further accelerated, which effectively alleviated the congestion problem and guaranteed the timely delivery of imported meat products. The reefer containers on “MSC Brunella” arriving at the Port of Tianjin came from the ports of various countries including Singapore and Malaysia that were previously stranded abroad. They were loaded with frozen meat, frozen seafood and frozen dairy products that mainly supplied Beijing and Tianjin markets.
